What Microsoft shipped

September 8, 2026's update KB5124008 for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 carried security fixes plus visible changes: a taskbar that can sit on any edge, a smaller taskbar option, Start menu size choices, and search settings that can turn off web and Store suggestions. Microsoft also continued Secure Boot certificate delivery and fixed issues such as a black desktop background and mouse-pointer colors.

An out-of-band update on September 14, KB5129195, addressed Remote Desktop instability and a Hyper-V sharing bug that showed up after the earlier September update. Home machines that do not use Remote Desktop still want that newer package because it is cumulative.

What you should do

Plug in, install, restart, and give the machine a quiet hour before you call it slow. If search looks different, the privacy toggles are under Settings, Privacy and security, Search. You do not need a new laptop because the taskbar moved.

Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro reach the end of updates on October 13, 2026. Microsoft says unmanaged home devices will be offered 25H2. Let that install. Version 26H1 is for new devices, not an in-place upgrade for the PC you already have.

When to book

Book a tune-up if an update fails repeatedly, the desktop stays black, or the computer is too slow to finish the install. Online help works when you can share the screen.

We will not turn off security updates to chase a one-day slowdown.
