Wi-Fi 7 at home in 2026: what the numbers mean

What was measured

Ookla reported that Wi-Fi 7's share of U.S. Speedtest samples rose to about 7.2 percent in the first quarter of 2026, from about 1.8 percent a year earlier. Fiber providers such as CenturyLink and Frontier led penetration. Cable providers, especially Spectrum, accounted for a large share of the raw sample volume. Globally, Wi-Fi 7 was still a small slice of connections.

Those figures describe people who run speed tests, not every kitchen. They are enough to say the hardware is real and not enough to say your house is late.

A bedroom problem is often placement.

What it changes

Wi-Fi 7 helps when the plan is fast and the phones or laptops in the room can speak it. It does not help a doorbell that only joins 2.4 GHz, and it does not fill a back bedroom by itself. Ookla also noted that a step to Wi-Fi 6 or 6E is sometimes the right fit.

What to book
