Trade-in season: transfer the phone before you ship it

The seasonal push

Each fall the new phones arrive and the trade-in instructions say to erase and ship. The instructions are written for a phone that is already copied. If the cloud upload never finished, the mailer is how the photos leave the house.

Keep the old phone through one day of real use on the new one: mail, bank, authenticator, a recent video. Then erase and remove it from your account.

eSIM swaps need Wi-Fi and a carrier release. Do that before the old phone is wiped, because some approvals appear on the old line. A physical SIM moves with the tray. Test a call.

Trade-in timing — A visit can sit with you for the transfer. It cannot unlock a carrier dispute.

New phone setup is the visit. Online works if you can tap the prompts. In-home works if you want a cable backup checked at the table.

Two-factor apps move by their own export. A wiped authenticator is a week of recovery. Do that step first.
