The products
Coverage from CES 2026 showed more thermostats aimed at Matter, including Thread models that expect a home hub as a border router. Apple, Google, and others do not all implement every new device type on the same month. A thermostat can be certified and still wait on your phone's app.
Remote control from the driveway is a hub feature. The heat still depends on the wires at the wall.
The wires
Photograph the terminals before you buy. A missing C wire stops installs regardless of the radio. Heat-pump labels are a compatibility list, not a vibe. Our thermostat guide walks that photo.
If the system needs a transformer or a control board we do not touch, an HVAC technician is the next call. We restore a safe stop rather than improvise.

Smart thermostat install is the compatibility check, the swap when it matches, and the app. Have Wi-Fi and the account ready.
A Matter logo is not a reason to replace a thermostat that already holds the schedule you use.
