Matter cameras and doorbells: what your app can do today

The spec added cameras. Your phone's home app may still be catching up.
The news
The Connectivity Standards Alliance added cameras and video doorbells in Matter 1.5, using WebRTC for live view, plus clips and snapshots. Matter 1.5.1, announced by the Alliance, tuned streaming, doorbell behavior, chimes that can play a chosen sound, and intercoms.
That is real progress away from one-brand apps. It is not a promise that every phone app already shows every feature.
What we see in homes
A camera still needs power and Wi-Fi, or Thread where the product uses it, and a hub when the ecosystem asks for one. Google's own Matter notes say mixed Thread and Wi-Fi homes need a border router. A logo on the box does not place that hub.
We install and test the live view in the app you use. If Matter pairing is supported there, we use it. If the app is not ready, we use the maker's supported path and say so.
What not to buy twice
Do not replace a working doorbell only for a Matter mark until your phone can add that device type. Read the weak-porch guide if the current one fails video. The network is still the usual fault.
Indoor privacy rules do not change because the protocol did. We still will not hide a camera from the household.
