Printers that disappear after a computer update

The printer is often fine. The computer forgot the path.
Order of restarts
Update the computer, restart it, then power the printer off for thirty seconds. Many printers only announce themselves when they boot onto a network the computer is already on.
If the printer still has the old Wi-Fi name in its screen menu, the update is not the cause. The network name changed and the printer stayed behind.
The queue
Open the print queue and cancel every stuck job. One document from last month will hold the new page forever. Then print a one-line test, not a 40-page PDF.
USB printers that were unplugged during the update need the cable seated and the system allowed to fetch the driver. Give it two minutes before you conclude the port is dead.
When to book
Book printer troubleshooting if two computers lost it, or if it prints a network page from its own menu but not from the laptop. That split tells us where the break is.
A setup visit is the better booking when the printer is new. Troubleshooting assumes it worked once.
