New computer setup checklist before you recycle the old one

Sign in, move files, print a page, then keep the old computer for one day.
Day one
Connect power, join Wi-Fi, and let the system updates finish before you judge the speed. Sign into the browser and the mail account you use for receipts. Those two unlock most other apps.
Install the printer and print one page. A new computer that cannot print is not finished, even if the desktop looks clean.
Files
Photos that live only on the old computer need a cable or an external drive. Cloud folders copy themselves only if the old computer was actually syncing. Open the cloud folder and confirm recent pictures are there before you trust it.
Desktop files and downloads are the folders people forget. Sort them into keep and trash while both computers are on. A setup visit moves the keep pile and checks that documents open.
The old computer
Leave it signed in for a day. If a password manager or a work app is missing, you can still open it on the old machine. After that, sign out of mail and wipe the drive before donation or sale.
