How to keep a family computer usable for homework

One account per person, and a printer test the night before it is due.

Give each person a sign-in. Shared desktops collect toolbars, games, and saved passwords in one pile. A child account can be limited without locking the adult out of updates.
Homework files belong in a folder named for the school year, not on the desktop under Today's download (14).
The printer and the call
The failure mode is a worksheet that will not print at 10 p.m. Join the printer to the family Wi-Fi, print one page, and leave the computer awake long enough for updates earlier in the week.
Video class needs a camera that is not covered and a microphone that is not the TV. Test a call from the same chair they use. School setup visits do that test for you.
A short lesson
If the computer works and the person using it does not feel sure, book a lesson instead of a repair. One topic: files, mail, or the video app. Practice it before the technician leaves.
