What to do before a technician connects remotely

· 4 min read · EasyTechdesk

Power, password, and a sentence about the problem. Not every password you own.

Laptop plugged in for an online session
Close banking tabs before you share the screen.

The room and the power

Plug in the laptop. Disable sleep for the hour if you know how, or tap the trackpad when you step away. A sleeping computer looks like a dropped session.

Use the home Wi-Fi if it works. If the computer is the only device offline, a phone hotspot lets the session start so we can look at settings.

Quiet desk for screen sharing
The Windows password is the one we need, typed by you.

Privacy

Close bank, medical, and tax tabs. You can watch the cursor the entire time. If we need a mailbox, you type the password. It is not written into the notes.

If someone else in the house uses the computer, ask them before the share starts. Their chat windows are on that screen too.

Remote session preparation
Write the error in a note if it disappears.

The sentence

Tell us the last change: a Windows update, a new printer, or a move. That sentence is faster than an hour of guessing.

If a code appears, photograph it with your phone before it vanishes. Online notes can include that photo if you read it aloud.
